At Harron we’re always eager to support the local wildlife around our developments, and to mark National Hedgehog week we donated £250 to various hedgehog shelters close to our developments.
Every year in Britain we celebrate National Hedgehog week in order to help raise awareness of the danger and difficulty facing one of the nation’s most popular animals.
Hedgehog populations are declining year by year, and the rescue centres dedicated to saving the hedgehogs require aid and support in order to continue to work.
Located in Ripley close to our Shipley Lakeside development, on the Derbyshire border, is Twiggaras Wildlife & Small Animal Rescue. The centre, operated by Sara Twigg and her family, specialises in rescuing and treating sick hedgehogs, while also providing nurture and aid for other injured animals. Throughout the year the rescue centre is dedicated to responding to as many calls as possible, treating and nursing the hedgehogs to health before releasing them into the wild. Sara has recently re-released a group of hedgehogs back into the wild following the creatures’ recuperation at Twiggaras over the winter.
7th Heaven Hedgehog Rescue is located close to The Brambles in Retford, Nottinghamshire. 7th Heaven Hedgehog Rescue is operated by Sue Smith, a self-funded carer working on behalf of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. Sue works tirelessly to help hedgehogs, venturing out to locate injured critters and bring them back to her self-run rescue centre, where they can be nursed back to health. Having worked with wildlife for many years, Sue and 7th Heaven Hedgehog Rescue centre are an invaluable resource in the rehabilitation of one of Britain’s best beloved species.
Local to Thoresby Vale, Mansfield Wildlife Rescue UK is a self-funded rescue service located in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. The family-run rescue service is dedicated to the rescue, care and rehabilitation of sick or injured animals, regardless of species or status. A registered charity, Mansfield Wildlife Rescue use the money they raise to buy veterinary care, food and medications for the sick and injured animals they harbour in their home.
Hedgehog populations are declining year by year, and these rescue centres dedicated to saving the hedgehogs require aid and support in order to continue to work. As well as donating to these rescue centres, we aid the population by including hedgehog highways, allowing the hedgehogs to travel freely between plots on our developments, and by regularly installing hedgehog homes for those hedgehogs curious about our showhomes.
If you’d like to make your own hedgehog home, a tutorial from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society can be found here: https://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/hedgehog-homes.
