Luxury housebuilder Harron Homes has partnered with charity SongBird Survival for National Robin Day, which is on the 21st December. In an ongoing commitment to protecting local wildlife, Harron Homes has made a donation to the charity, and has worked with an expert to ascertain the best way for homeowners to attract robins to their gardens this festive period.
Georgina Bradley from SongBird Survival has shared her top tips for attracting robins with Harron Homes. She says:
“Like all birds and other wildlife, robins need food, water and safety, and a suitable place to nest in the spring.
- “The best food sources for robins come from a biodiverse garden with lots of different types of plants and structures for insects to live on – robins love eating insects! It’s also a great idea to provide supplementary food for the cold winter months when natural food sources are scarce:
- Mealworms, suet pellets and sunflower seeds are great. You can also put out kitchen scraps as long as they’re not too salty!
- “Keep water baths clean and clear of snow and ice. It’s also a good idea to keep feeders clean and don’t put out too much food at a time – it’s no good to anyone if it’s rotten.
- “In terms of shelter, dense bushes and trees are perfect for robins to snuggle down against the winter cold and wet.
- “Robins love tall trees to sign from – their song marks their territory. The more beautiful the song, the better their territory as it means the robin is strong and fit.
- “When it comes to spring, robins aren’t fussy about where they want to nest – they’ll readily take to most cup shaped depressions they can find as long as it’s sheltered and away from roaming cats and magpies. An open-fronted nest box is a great addition. You can find out how to make one on our website. Put the box away from cold winds and harsh sunlight, preferably with foliage nearby.”
Harron Homes has made a donation to SongBird Survival, which will be used towards its valuable research and efforts to prevent the extinction of British songbirds.
In addition to the donation, Harron Homes will be gifting family memberships to SongBird Survival for all customers moving in from National Robin Day until the end of February, as well as entering them into a draw to win a bird feeding station for their garden.
“We’re delighted to be working with SongBird Survival for National Robin Day,” said Alison Taylor-Shaw, Director of Sales and Marketing for Yorkshire. “At Harron Homes, we’ve really focused in on protecting and preserving wildlife in our developments and surrounding communities in 2020. We’re pleased to be able to support a small charity doing great work for wildlife and the environment, and we hope our customers will enjoy utilising our top tips and hopefully seeing some beautiful robins in their garden this winter!”
